How to use Proteva

Local password and file vault for Mac

First launch

1. Create a master password of 12 or more characters.
2. Unlock with that password each time you open the app.
3. If you forget it, the vault cannot be opened. There is no reset.

Logins

Add a login with ⌘N, or import a Notes dump with ⌘I. Paste or drop the text, review the table, and import the rows you want. Search with ⌘F.

Copy a username with ⌘⇧U or a password with ⌘⇧C. The clipboard clears after 30 seconds if it still holds that value.

Files

Select Files in the sidebar. ⌘N makes a folder. ⌘I imports documents, photos, or video. Proteva stores an encrypted copy. Select a file to preview it. Use Save a copy when you want a decrypted file outside the vault.

Lock and appearance

Lock with ⌘L. The vault also locks after 5 minutes with no activity. Appearance is under Proteva → Settings (⌘,) or View → Appearance: System, Light, or Dark.

Backups

Vault → Export Encrypted Backup… writes a .vaultnotes file to a place you choose. Restore Backup… replaces the vault with that file. An unencrypted CSV export asks you to type “I understand.”
